Ascend from the coastal heat into Sri Lanka’s central highlands and the entire register of the island changes. I. Nuwara Eliya: Little England in the Clouds
Built by British planters chasing a climate closer to home, Nuwara Eliya retains its colonial character almost intact — Tudor-style cottages, a private golf course, and a lake ringed by mist most mornings. It functions as the natural base for exploring the surrounding tea estates, with Single Tree Hill offering the town’s best panoramic view over the plantations below.
II. The Tea Estate Itself
A proper tea estate visit moves through the full production cycle: plucking the finest two leaves and a bud alongside experienced pickers, touring a working factory as leaf is withered, rolled, oxidized and fired, and finishing with a tasting session led by an estate’s own tea taster, distinguishing grades and elevations that most drinkers never learn to separate. For those wanting to stay inside the experience rather than simply visit it, restored colonial planter’s bungalows — some dating over a century — now operate as private accommodations, complete with butler service, fireplace lounges, and views over the very estate that built them.
III. The Railway
The rail line connecting Kandy to Ella is frequently cited among the most scenic train journeys anywhere in the world, and for good reason: nearly seven hours of terraced tea slopes, pine forest, waterfall valleys and tunnel-cut ridgelines pass by a single carriage window. A private observation carriage, arranged in advance, turns a popular but often crowded route into a considerably more comfortable one, without losing any of the scenery that makes it worth riding in the first place.

Outside those months, the same landscape simply trades clarity for atmosphere — mist rolling through the tea rows is, for many visitors, the postcard image of Sri Lanka’s hill country in the first place.
